Under the authority of the Hérault Prefect, the Water Resources Monitoring Committee met for the first time this year on Tuesday 28 March 2023 to review the hydrological and meteorological situation.
In the département, indicators of the state of water resources are already showing early signs of a tense situation.
Winter rainfall, which normally recharges our water tables and rivers, has been in short supply for the past 2 seasons.
For several months now, rainfall levels on the Orb and Libron rivers have been well below normal. It has rained less than half the normal amount since October in the Hérault.
The Hérault Prefect has placed the Orb catchment area, its tributary and the Jaur catchment on alert due to a worrying hydrological situation.
The autumn and winter rains did not recharge the water tables sufficiently, and the flow rates in some rivers are abnormally low for the season.
In view of all the data collected and the short-term weather forecasts, the Prefect of the Hérault department has issued a decree placing the Orb catchment area on alert.
The first measures to restrict the use of water by the general public have therefore come into force: for example, until further notice, washing vehicles (except at professional stations) and filling private swimming pools are prohibited.

Faced with the risk of a breakdown in water use, we need to think ahead now and save water in the home and garden by adopting good habits on a daily basis.
Let's be vigilant about our water consumption to preserve our natural resources and have a great summer!
Water is becoming scarce, every drop counts, every gesture counts - let's save it!
