In accordance with the legislative and regulatory provisions relating to dangerous animals, if you are the owner or keeper of 1st and 2nd category dogs, you have been obliged since 1 January 2010 to obtain a possession permit (for dogs over 1 year old) or a provisional possession permit (for dogs under eight months old) from your local town hall.
Procedure
The issue of one of these permits is subject to the submission, to the Police Municipale, of a file comprising the following documents:

The declaration must be made by the dog's owner
Documents to be presented
- Dog booklet
- Identification card (with tattoo number)
- Valid rabies vaccination certificate
- Valid insurance certificate
- For 1st category dogs: sterilisation certificate
- Owner's aptitude certificate issued by an approved trainer
- Certificate of behavioural assessment of the dog issued by an approved vet. As this certificate can only be issued for dogs over 8 months old, a provisional permit will be issued for animals under 8 months old.
